Sedentary behavior, characterized by prolonged physical inactivity, is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Studies indicate that a sedentary lifestyle contributes to obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease, increasing morbidity and mortality rates globally (Adeyemi et al., 2023). In Nigeria, urbanization, technological advancements, and lifestyle changes have led to a rise in physical inactivity, especially among individuals with pre-existing cardiac conditions (Okonkwo et al., 2024). Given the serious health implications, addressing sedentary behavior among cardiac patients is essential for improving health outcomes and reducing hospital readmissions.
Cardiac nurses play a crucial role in promoting physical activity among patients through education, counseling, and lifestyle modification programs. As frontline healthcare providers, they are well-positioned to encourage patients to adopt active lifestyles, monitor their progress, and provide tailored interventions to address barriers to physical activity (Eze et al., 2023). Research has shown that patients who receive structured guidance from nurses are more likely to engage in regular physical activity, leading to improved cardiovascular health (Adelakun et al., 2024).
Despite the well-documented benefits of nurse-led interventions, there is limited research on their effectiveness in reducing sedentary lifestyles among patients in Borno State. Given the security challenges and limited healthcare resources in the region, many cardiac patients may not receive adequate support in making lifestyle changes. This study seeks to assess the impact of cardiac nurses in promoting physical activity and reducing sedentary behavior among patients in Borno State, contributing to evidence-based strategies for improving cardiovascular health.
The increasing prevalence of sedentary lifestyles among cardiac patients in Nigeria has become a major public health concern. Studies indicate that many individuals with heart conditions fail to engage in recommended levels of physical activity, leading to worsened health outcomes and increased hospitalizations (Chukwu et al., 2023). Several barriers contribute to this issue, including a lack of awareness, fear of exacerbating existing conditions, and insufficient professional guidance.
Cardiac nurses, who play a pivotal role in patient education and rehabilitation, have the potential to mitigate this problem by providing targeted interventions. However, the extent to which nurse-led initiatives impact sedentary behavior among patients in Borno State remains unclear. Given the unique healthcare challenges in the region, assessing the effectiveness of cardiac nurses in reducing sedentary lifestyles is essential for designing effective interventions.
This study will focus on cardiac patients receiving care in selected healthcare facilities in Borno State. It will examine the role of cardiac nurses in encouraging physical activity and assess the effectiveness of their interventions.
Limitations may include variations in patient adherence to recommendations, the impact of external factors such as security challenges, and differences in nurses’ approaches to promoting physical activity.
